By now, I hope that you have received Nassau County Council on Aging’s 2023 Annual Report that highlights how we have served seniors throughout Nassau County in the past year. As our senior population continues to grow, the impact from your generous support remains critical for us to continue to provide programs and services to this beloved part of our community.
As you will see from the following story, many families require the multiple services that we provide to help seniors age in their own home, maintain a well-deserved quality of life, and give their families and caregivers peace of mind.
Recent survey results are clear – Americans overwhelmingly prefer and hope to age in place. Nassau County Council on Aging provides the programs and services to help make that hope a reality. Mrs. H shares her story*
Mrs. H lives in the home her uncle built in Fernandina over 50 years ago. After her husband died, her daughter moved in to help her. She has a full-time job and was finding it difficult to get her mom ready in the morning. Now, through the many services NCCOA provides, an Advocate Home Healthcare aide arrives at their home, Monday through Friday, to help get her mom ready for each day with a shower and a healthy breakfast.
Next, the aide helps Mrs. H boards the free NCCOA NassauTRANSIT bus. Today, she’s off to The Club at the Fernandina Beach Senior Life Center. After she arrives on the campus, she is greeted with a warm cup of coffee and the company of her many friends.
She looks forward to The Club activities that help her physical, cognitive and emotional wellness. Mrs. H especially likes the exercise and yoga classes, art projects, brain games, group physical therapy and live music with dancing! A hot lunch and snacks are served, too.
At the end of the day, the NassauTRANSIT bus takes Mrs. H safely back to her home. When her daughter returns from work, they have a nice dinner and spend quality time catching up on their day—in the comfort of their own home.Through comprehensive programs and services, as well as caregiver support activities, NCCOA helps ensure our seniors—like Mrs H—are better able to age in place, living happy, healthy lives. We are only able to enhance the life of seniors through your generous support!
*Based on a true story
