Reality: Aging is a Challenge

Life’s unexpected change and challenge is a given, especially as we age. When we’re younger, it may seem easier to adapt and put things into perspective. Perhaps because we’re not as “wise to the ways of the world.” We’re more like ducks…change and challenge roll off our back. As we age, change is more difficult and challenge is more prevalent. Instead of rolling off our back, change and challenge can weigh us down. Reality: No one tells us about the not-so-great parts about getting older.

The change and challenge of aging can sometimes lead to unfamiliar territory. Here are three common realities, as well as solutions to help face these inevitabilities of growing older.

Reality: “I don’t feel like I have a purpose.”

There are many stereotypes of elderly people, which can lead to isolation and marginalization in a lot of communities. By coming up with innovative ways to involve older people in the community, we can help seniors maintain a sense of identity and self-esteem, and tap into their wealth of knowledge and experience.
Solution: NCCOA offers a wealth of opportunities to seniors, including social activities, fitness classes, arts & crafts and technology how-to’s, to name just a few. You can even create your own opportunity and teach the class! Plus, everyone has a life story. Make a point of sharing it with family and friends.

Reality: “I’m depressed.”

Old age is often portrayed as a time of rest, reflection and opportunities to do things that were put off while raising families and pursuing careers. Unfortunately, the aging process is not always so idyllic. Late-life events such as chronic and debilitating medical disorders, loss of friends and loved ones, and the inability to take part in once-cherished activities can take a heavy toll on our emotional well-being. Depression is all too common.
Solution: First, know you’re not alone. The longer you live, the more you lose. But as you lose people and things, life becomes even more precious. Focus on what you’re grateful for. Apart from scheduled activities at our Senior Life Centers in Fernandina Beach and Hilliard, hang out with your friends and crochet, read or have a chat over coffee.

Reality: “I can’t do what I used to do.”

Our mobility and dexterity naturally decline as we age, which makes completing everyday tasks more difficult. These difficulties can gradually prevent us from being social, pursuing interests or taking part in activities we enjoy.
Solution: Our Life Centers offer programs which not only enable seniors to live independently (CHORE small home repair program), but those which help us deal with the physical side of aging (stability, chair yoga, core strengthening). We’re always adding new opportunities!

One final reality: While we cannot change the inevitable, we can change our attitude.

Singular happenings or events may be easy to overcome. However, with age may come multiple setbacks. We can sink into our ongoing aches and pains, or find that little patch of blue. It’s our choice. And that’s empowering.
