Mission-Minded Momentum

In my years of experience in the nonprofit world, one word sums up the key to success: Momentum. If your organization – including partners, donors, leadership, staff – is in an ongoing state of moving forward together, you’ve achieved momentum. Even when obstacles cast a shadow on the horizon, you take them in stride and work together to move in a forward motion. That’s momentum.

“Mission-minded momentum” takes that one step further. At Nassau County Council on Aging (NCCOA), our mission is to enhance the lives of older adults through services and compassionate care designed to improve the health, independence and economic security of all Nassau County seniors and their families.

We’ve been minding our mission since 1984. Yes, that’s almost 50 years of service to Nassau County seniors. As with most organizations, we’ve had our ups and downs (mostly ups). However, we’re constantly learning from our past, living in the present and planning for the future.

In 2022, we served close to 5,800 people through nutrition support, home health, adult day care, transportation, CHORE small home repair, senior life centers and our volunteer program. So how can we use momentum of our past and present to our advantage in the future?

First, we must keep action-oriented goals at the forefront; the more precise the better. It’s much easier to take action if you have a roadmap. At NCCOA, the roadmap is our strategic planning process. Goals become fuel to drive momentum; momentum can also fuel new goals. Keep your eye on the roadmap. It should always support your mission, and provide a step-by-step process for achievement.

Second, be realistic. Momentum is both powerful and vulnerable. While momentum acts as necessary fuel for progress, it can also speed out of control. Momentum must act within a framework, and be constantly monitored. Too much momentum can blur the community’s perception of your mission. Keep your forward progress in balance.

Third, rely on internal and external influences and resources to build on momentum. NCCOA Board, leadership and staff are mission-minded and second to none. Our internal foundation is firm. The local community, including partners, donors, elected officials and others, are at the ready with broad experience and generous financial assistance to help kick-start our momentum at a moment’s notice.

Our momentum continues into 2023, as the senior population in Nassau County increases dramatically each year. Today, seniors comprise approximately 30% of our county, with a substantial percentage (estimated at 8-11%) living at or below the poverty level.

We are counting on our momentum – with your help – to help ensure seniors have what they need to live happy, healthy lives.
