Senior Alone

Isolation and Loneliness

Think back to when you were growing up. Remember that one house in the neighborhood that remained dark most of the time (even on Halloween!). You heard that an older person lived there, but you never saw her. You figured this person liked to be alone. But the reality was most likely that this person was elderly and unable to get around very well. With the energy she had, getting herself out of bed each morning, preparing some simple food and remaining stationery most of the day became a way of life…her only way of life.

Nearly one-fourth of adults aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated. Many seniors may live alone having lost their significant other. They may suffer from depression, anxiety or dementia. Aging can result in decreased mobility and poor health. Transportation options may be limited. According to the CDC, social isolation is associated with close to a 50% percent increased risk of dementia and other serious medical conditions.

Humans – no matter what your age – are social creatures. We are not meant to be alone.

Nassau County Council on Aging offers a meaningful connection for our seniors to combat isolation and loneliness. Check us out…I know for certain we offer at least one opportunity to pique your interest. Our classes run the gamut from bridge to canasta, yoga to tai chi, gardening to singalongs, photography to meditation. They change every quarter (but we keep your favorites). We also have a morning program, complete with Bingo, music and a hot lunch. NassauTRANSIT will pick you up and drop you off…with a smile.

On our own, we can help keep our seniors engaged in life…

      • Start a conversation with a senior. They all have really interesting life stories.
      • Offer practical help with tasks and chores.
      • Have a meal…together.
      • Enjoy a good book or movie.
      • Take a walk or ride.

Sharing this column with someone can help jump start an end to feeling alone in the world. Make a date to visit our Fernandina Beach or Westside Senior Life Centers. Invite a senior to share his or her world with you. You’ll be glad you did.
