Did you know that close to 30% of caregivers pass away before the loved one they’re caring for? This statistic does not surprise me in the least because I am a caregiver.
I am my father’s primary caregiver, taking care of him through long-term illness. It’s very rewarding and meaningful, and caring for him is truly among my greatest blessings. However, it’s also the most challenging role I’ve ever had.
According to the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers, caregiving is currently a national public health challenge. Current estimates number family caregivers in the U.S. at 53 million. The importance of the health and well-being of this ever-increasing group cannot – and should not – be minimized. While it can sound a bit heroic to be a caregiver, the reality is that it can bring out a huge assortment of emotions, both positive and negative. I find myself feeling that I’ve done too much or not enough; it’s difficult to find the balance.
My own personal experience, coupled with the realities of caregiving, led Nassau County Council on Aging to strengthen our focus on “caring for the caregiver.” In addition to our Fernandina Beach Senior Life Center-based twice-monthly caregiver support group meetings and Adult Day HealthCare program for those with dementia or chronic illness – known as The Club – we have hands-on training to benefit caregivers:

NCCOA is at the forefront of needed caregiving education to support the rapidly rising number of families impacted by dementia and chronic illness. While the forum and workshop are helpful resources, we know it does not solve the challenges of caregiving and caregivers. It’s critical to keep the dialogue open, and share our experiences. Send us your feedback at happyhealthyseniors@nassaucountycoa.org.
We’re all in this together.
